NVIDIA RTX 5090: specs, power draw and who it is actually for

The RTX 5090 is the top of NVIDIA's Blackwell consumer line. It is also the first consumer card in years where the rest of the build has to be planned around the GPU rather than the other way round. Here are the real numbers and what they mean in practice.

The specifications that matter

All figures below are NVIDIA's own, from the RTX 5090 product page.

  • 21,760 CUDA cores on the Blackwell architecture.
  • 32GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus. The capacity is the headline for anyone doing 3D, video or local AI work.
  • 2.01 GHz base, 2.41 GHz boost.
  • 5th generation Tensor cores, rated at 3,352 AI TOPS.
  • DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation.
  • Display output up to 4K at 480Hz, or 8K at 165Hz with DSC.

575W changes the build around it

This is the part most buyers underestimate. NVIDIA rates the card at a 575W total graphics power and recommends a 1000W system power supply as the minimum. Power comes from either four PCIe 8-pin cables or a single 600W PCIe Gen 5 cable.

Three practical consequences:

  • The power supply is not the place to save money. A 1000W unit is the floor, not the target, and quality matters more than the number on the box.
  • Case airflow has to be deliberate. 575W becomes heat inside the chassis, and a card that thermally throttles gives back the performance you paid for.
  • Physical clearance is real. Check card length and the depth needed for the power connector before committing to a small case.

Who it is actually for

Being honest about this saves people money.

It makes sense if you are running 4K at high refresh rates, doing 3D rendering or video work where render time is billable, or running local AI models where the 32GB of VRAM is the deciding factor rather than a nice-to-have.

It does not make sense if you play mainly at 1080p or 1440p. At those resolutions the CPU and the monitor become the limit long before the GPU does, and the money is better spent elsewhere in the build. An RTX 5070 Ti build at around RM 7,500 covers 1440p ultra comfortably.
